Farmingdale native and award-winning author Peter Bronski is proud to announce the release of his book, At the Mercy of the Mountains: True Stories of Survival and Tragedy in New York’s Adirondacks. Published by The Lyons Press, the compelling book chronicles true stories of misadventure, from famous historical cases during the early 20th century, to modern tales of harrowing struggle in the mountains and wilderness. Extensively researched, these gripping tales pull together historical accounts, first-hand interviews, previously untold stories and expert analysis to retrace each story. More than just a recounting of tragedy in the wilderness, At the Mercy of the Mountains is an affirmation of the triumph of the human spirit in the face of adversity, and an insight into why misadventure happens in the first place – and how to avoid it. At the Mercy of the Mountains is a must read for hikers, climbers, paddlers, armchair travelers – anyone who loves a great tale of adventure. |

Kudos to the Farmingdale State Rams Division III Club Hockey Team!
On Sunday, March 2nd at the Mennen Arena in Mennen, New Jersey they did what many thought was the impossible… they beat University at Albany to become the Metropolitan Collegiate Hockey Conference Champions in a nail-biting sudden death overtime. It was a marvelous display of team work and determination that has been the fabric of who these boys are and how far they have come.
(L to R) Asst. Capt. Joe Swiciki , Capt. Frank Ingebrethsen, Asst. Capt. Joe Mazzie & Asst. Capt. Matt Dorsey
Coached by Jon LaRochester and Assistant Coach Mike Marino, the Rams have fought their way through the ranks to secure their place at the top finishing the season with a 21-2 record. With a genuine respect and appreciation for each other and a camaraderie that goes beyond the ice, Captain Frank Ingebrethsen and Assistant Captains Matt Dorsey, Joe Mazzie and Joe Swiciki have guided this talented team to their final destination… Nationals. By beating both Hofstra University and PSU-Behrend in the Regional Tournament held February 15th and 16th in Warwick Pennsylvania, the Rams will be heading to Rochester, Minnesota March 12th through March 15th where they will play teams from all over the country.
We congratulate the Rams on their extraordinary
achievements
and wish them the best of luck!

by Dick Charles In this thrilling novel, the year is 1945 and Nazi Germany is on the verge of defeat. Hitler launches a secret attack on America, using a secret submarine. U90420 has the capability to carry and launch aircraft. The goal of this bold and probably one-way mission is to bomb New York and Washington, DC, using newly developed bombs, and only one Nazi scientist on board is aware of their destructive potential. All is proceeding as planned until U90420 is caught in a hole in time and passes into the present day. Her captain makes her presence known when he can't resist the temptation to torpedo a huge, brightly painted cruise ship. From this moment, the U90420 is hunted by the military and antiterrorism might of present-day America. Will U90420 succeed? Will Hitler have his vengeance from the grave?Dick Charles is a native New Yorker and freelance musician. "When I am not pursuing music, I enjoy reading about military history," he said. "This book has been a long labor of love for me." |

Dalers: Conference Champs & 300 Game
Varsity Team (L to R); Alex Udowitch, Nick
Lombardi, Mitch |
Daler Boy’s Varsity Bowling team won the Conference Championship for the 3rd time in 4 seasons. They also placed 2nd in the Nassau County playoffs. All-County bowler, senior Nick Caravella, who finished the season with a 202 average, led the team this year to Conference Champs. Nick was the Captain and strong anchor bowler for this year’s Dalers Team. Junior Nick Lombardi was another All-County bowler who finished with a 201 average. Nick also had the distinction of bowling a perfect 300 game; a first in Farmingdale’s bowling history. He was one of only three bowlers who had a perfect game in the county. Senior Mitch Kennedy finished the season with a 195 average and was named All-League. He also rolled 677, which was the highest series in the Conference. |
|
Alex Udowitch finished the season with a 189 average and was an important member during the County playoffs, receiving high series in our Conference with a 724-pin fall. Junior John Luther finished the season with a 188 average. Sophomore Nick DeLauro was a new addition to the team finishing the season with a 196 average. The boy’s Junior Varsity also finished in first place in the Conference. The team was comprised of Jeremy Toner with a 191 average, Dan Rice with a 188 average, Chris Norton with a 183 average, Dan DeRienzo and Evan Udowitch with a 171 average. In addition Matt Flapan had a 171 average, John Nicholas had a 178 average and Scott Fritsche had a 173 average. At the County playoffs, the boy’s team was leading most of the day and was only defeated in the last game of the day by mere pins. The five-man team each averaged 200 for their six games. Mitch Kennedy had the highest game for the tournament with a 279 and Alex Udowitch had the third highest series with a 742. Nick Caravella and Nick Lombardi represented the team at the Individual County playoffs. The entire Varsity and Junior Varsity team didn’t have a bowler with less than a 171 average for the year. This was the most successful season in the history of the boy’s bowling team. Dalers bowling will graduate eight seniors this year and they will all be greatly missed. The girl’s Varsity team also had a very successful year finishing in second
place in the Conference. All-County bowler Danielle Fritsche led the team with a
166 average. Danielle represented the team at the Nassau Individual County
Playoff. Junior Nicole Hernandez finished with a 137 average and was an
All-Conference bowler along with Junior Kim Falcone who finished the year with a
135 average. Sophomores Kristen Reinhardt and Kim DeRienzo finished the season
with a 140 and 138 respectively. Freshman Courtney Guidice was also a wonderful
addition to the team finishing with a 145 average. This was the second year in a
row the girls qualified to participate in the County playoffs. Announcement & picture submitted by: jlcaravella[at]yahoo.com 5/31/07 |

Farmingdale Teen Attends Forum on Medicine
Eric Wider
Attends National Youth Leadership
Forum on Medicine16 year old Eric Wider, of Farmingdale, recently enrolled in the prestigious National Youth Leadership Forum on Medicine (NYLF/MED), taking place in Philadelphia, PA from July 20 to July 29. The National Youth Leadership Forum on Medicine Offers Career Exploration.
During this career development program, Wider joined more than 350 other high school students from around the country who demonstrate academic excellence, leadership potential and an interest in medicine.
Throughout the ten-day forum, NYLF/MED introduced Wider to a variety of concepts in public health, medical ethics, research and general practice, including site visits to medical facilities and clinics. Students engaged in a simulation using problem-based learning, an educational method in which students were presented a fictional patient's case history and had to diagnose and develop a treatment plan for the patient. "The National Youth Leadership Forum on Medicine offers students like Eric Wider a chance to complement their classroom experience," said Donna Snyder, Executive Director of NYLF. "This will enhance the current knowledge of these students, providing a glimpse at where they might find themselves in the medical universe." Snyder concluded, "It's never too early in a young person's life to start exploring which career to pursue. We give these students a behind-the-scenes look at what it takes to become a medical professional."
In addition to site visits to cutting-edge medical schools and clinical facilities, Wider had the opportunity to hear from and interact with leaders within the medical field. Students had up-close personal contact with physicians, surgeons, researchers, scientists and medical educators as they went behind the scenes to view these professionals at work.
...a glimpse of Wider's Dorm Room:
We suspect that Eric might have an interest in "studying bacteria"!
Perhaps he will end up pursuing a career in microbiology? :-)NYLF is a nonprofit educational organization that brings various professions to life, empowering outstanding young people with the confidence to make well-informed career choices. NYLF has provided programming to more than 50,000 young people. For additional information, visit www.nylf.org.
